THE LEASH

The leash. It’s a symbol of the special bond that exists between a handler and a dog,
a bond based on trust, mutual respect, and yes, maybe even love.

As with other time-honored relationships, this one comes with its own rite of passage. It’s one called “the passing of the leash,” and is observed when the time comes for the next person in line to reach out a hand and take responsibility for training, maintaining and preparing a search-and-rescue dog.

In a sense, this rite–this passing of the leash–could be said to take place often, and in other meaningful ways, over the life of one of these heroic canines. Every time someone puts out their hand to offer support, resources, or the sacrifice of personal time, they are effectively helping move this dog on down the line toward that critical moment: when a life, one that might otherwise be lost, is saved.

How can you best support Ground Zero? How can you play a part in “passing the leash”?
